Data Sources

Data in LMIC’s Data Hub includes indicators like employment and unemployment rates, employment growth month over month and year over year, labour force participation, average weekly, hourly and annual wages, job posting counts and growth year over year, work requirements and more. LMIC will ingest, curate and make available other labour market data on an ongoing basis. Some of this ingested data is available through the CJTD (Canadian Jobs Trends Dashboard), and all of it via API request and the Data Hub Sandbox. Our data partners currently include Statistics Canada and Vicinity Jobs. LMIC economists carefully evaluate the quality and relevance of data included in the Data Hub.

Statistics Canada

Statistics Canada is the main data provider of the Data Hub. LMIC ingests data from Statistics Canada, monthly, through two access point: CODR (common output database repository) and RTRA (real time remote access). RTRA is a method of ingesting specific and not necessarily published or public data from Statistics Canada. LMIC requests the data each month and is returned the relevant data excluding microdata to protect the anonomity of surveyees. CODR data, on the other hand, is publicly available and also excludes microdata.

The Data Hub ingests two monthly surveys from Statistics Canada: LFS (Labour Force Survey) and the JVWS (Job Vacancy and Wage Survey). The LFS is a questionnaire conducted by Statistics Canada which samples individuals in Canada for details regarding their employment, or lack thereof. The JVWS is a questionnaire which samples employers' with at least one employee on their payroll, to provide detailed information regarding job vacanicies in Canada.

Vicinity Jobs

Vicinity Jobs is a private company which provides information about job postings in Canada and their associated work requirements. This data can be viewed through the CJTD, API requests, and the Data Hub Sandbox. LMIC has an agreement with Vicinity Jobs to ensure all records are aggregated to a minimum of 25+ records to protect IP.

Auxillary Data Sources

A variety of lookup tables are used in the Data Hub to link coded values to their English and French labels. Currently, these auxiliary datasets are not accessible by external users.

Table of Auxiliary Data Sets

Data Set NameDescription
GeographyMapping across a variety of geographic entities (Economic Regions, CMA, Census Divisions, etc.)
OccupationNOC codes linked to their official French and English labels.
IndustryNAICS codes linked to their official French and English labels.
COPS ConcordanceESDC’s COPS forecasts groups Occupation and Industry at levels that differ slightly from the standard NOC and NAICS systems. The Data Hub maps with the ESDC groupings to provide information at the same level of aggregation.
Work RequirementsMaps Vicinity Jobs’ taxonomy of work requirements to slightly modified (and cleaner) taxonomy curated by LMIC and groups these work requirements into the categories of ESDC’s Skills and Competencies Taxonomy.
